The ILO estimates that unemployment is up by more than 30 million worldwide since 2007. As the ILO's Global Jobs Pact adopted in 2009 sets out, one of the key policy solutions to ending the worldwide jobs crisis will be equipping the workforce with the skills needed for employability. Delegates representing workers, employers, and ministries of labour and education from 43 countries, meeting in Geneva on 29–30 September, suggested policies and measures to be urgently put in place to strengthen technical and vocational education and training (TVET) systems worldwide.

L’OIT estime qu’à l’échelle mondiale le nombre de chômeurs a augmenté de 30 millions depuis 2007. Comme l’a défini le Pacte mondial pour l’emploi adopté par l’OIT en 2009, l’une des solutions clés pour mettre fin à la crise mondiale de l’emploi est de doter la main-d’oeuvre des qualifications indispensables à son employabilité. Des délégués représentant les travailleurs, les employeurs et les ministères du Travail et de l’Education de 43 pays, réunis à Genève les 29 et 30 septembre, ont préconisé des politiques et des mesures à mettre en place d’urgence pour renforcer les systèmes d’enseignement et de formation techniques et professionnels (EFTP) du monde entier.

International Task Force on Teachers for EFA

The International Task Force on ‘Teachers for Education for All’ (EFA) is the first ever international alliance of EFA partners working together to address the global teacher gap. Its creation was officially endorsed, as reflected in the Oslo declaration, by participants in the Eighth High-Level Group (HLG) meeting on EFA (Norway, 16 to 18 December 2008).

Recognizing the critical role that teachers play in providing Education for All, the Task Force aims to coordinate and foster collaboration on teacher provision worldwide, and to provide a new focus and impetus in the drive for Education for All. The Task Force is funded by several key EFA partners, and its Secretariat is housed at UNESCO.

The nationwide (USA) study, “Teaching for a Living: How Teachers See the Profession Today,” offers a comprehensive and nuanced look at how teachers differ in their perspectives on their profession, why they entered teaching, the atmosphere and leadership in their schools, the problems they face, their students and student outcomes, and ideas for reform. Taking a closer look at the nation’s teacher corps based on educators’ attitudes and motivations for teaching could provide some notable implications for how to identify, retain, and support the most effective teachers, according to the researchers.
